At this time in history, the Catholic Church controlled everything. It owned the land and decided the prices at which the land was sold, it made money off the lower contour by offering novelties such as holy relics and indulgences, but, some of all, it could be argued that it even owned society’s corporate mind in a way. It had become a “ product line of even greater importance” (Ginzburg37). Through tactics analogous censoring and literal interpretation of Scripture, they had the violence to decide what mixed bag of information and knowledge the greater majority of citizens were allowed obtain and go away no room for middle ground. This is the first step of the circle: prevention. The Catholic Church had to be the only source of federal agency and knowledge. They knew that if people were granted the right to read either books or hear any ideas that argued against their unflinchingly rigid laws,a revolution might result, and their positions of power would be threatened. As a result, they censored information and deemed any idea that hinted at potential change as “heresy,” which would, ideally, pander their power and allow them to continue to oppress their followers.
The presence of censorship and the fact that the Church was trying desperately to hide arguable material from society became very prevalent during Menochhio’s trials. The Inquisitors right away dismissed all of the sources Menochhio used to form his opinions as heresy, explaining that the books he read and interpreted were banned. Therefore, they were not only irrelevant, but the inclusion of these books in his testimony actually strengthened the Church’s case to label him as a heretic and a criminal.
