At the beginning of A White Heron we are introduced to a young girl named Sylvia who moved from the urban center to live with her grandmother. Sylvia and her grandmother live peacefully in the countryside, along with their cow, without a worry. In Sarah Orne Jewett and the Meaning of Country Life, Paul pot Eakin describes how Jewett enjoyed writing about the countryside, Never turning away from the minor world of her home in Maine, Miss Jewett dedicated her art to the conservation of traditional community values (Eakin 509).
