Realism in Sarah Orne Jewetts A discolor submarine sandwich (1881)
At the beginning of A White Heron we are introduced to a young girl named Sylvia who moved from the urban center to live with her grandmother. Sylvia and her grandmother live peacefully in the countryside, along with their cow, without a worry. In Sarah Orne Jewett and the Meaning of Country Life, Paul pot Eakin describes how Jewett enjoyed writing about the countryside, Never turning away from the minor world of her home in Maine, Miss Jewett dedicated her art to the conservation of traditional community values (Eakin 509). One twenty-four hours when Sylvia is travel the cow home from the pasture, she runs into a young serviceman who disturbs their peace. The man, who is never named, contributes countless conflicts, internally and externally. Through these conflicts, Sylvia experiences more forward-looking things which cause her to mature at a fast pace. In A White Heron (1881), Sarah Orne Jewett displays, how the hunter disturbs Sylvia and her grandmothers ways of naturalism, the conflicts of the story, and the plot idea of Sylvia maturing in order to delegate the realism portrayed throughout the story. Jewett exhibits a theme of naturalism in many different ways.
Although there are many different themes which could be related to the short story by Sarah Orne Jewett, one strong theme is naturalism. Naturalism in literary productions is defined as the use of realism to suggest that mixer conditions, heredity, and environment had inescapable force in shaping human beings character. The hunter disturbs this theme of naturalism and the first impression of this arises when opinion about how the male hunter interrupted Sylvia as she was walking the cow home one evening.
