There argon four types of prisons in the U.S. Federal prisons that circumscribe offenders of federal laws, pretrial detainees and pre-sentenced offenders for the U.S. Marshals Service and the Immigration and naturalization Service. (Inmate locator) State prisons incarcerate offenders of local and produce laws. Private prisons are for profit prisons contracted by the state to desex over overcrowding and reduce expenses. Lastly, there are jails that hold pris whizzrs that are sentenced less than one year.
The concept of prison as a total fundament is one of punishment, incapacitation and deterrence in this day and age. Although that is not how prisons started emerge in this country. The Quakers ran the first prison in Philadelphia, their idea was to take place offenders an opportunity to make amends with society and accept responsibleness for their crimes. The Quakers philosophy on incarceration was rehabilitation and deterrence. (Schmalleger, 2009) Over snip many ideas have been tried and either considered failed or withal costly so like a shot the concept of prison is get tough methods and zero tolerance are the answer that as a society we have come up with.
I hope when society a hundred years from now looks back at us they can see our mistakes and the prison arranging has completely disappeared because they found a preventative metre that really worked.
At this point in time jails lead an important role in our criminal justice system for many different reasons a few are
* New arrests unfinished arraignment, trail, conviction, or even sentencing
* Offenders sentenced to jail time
* Accused probation, discussion, or bail-bond violators pending revocation proceedings
* Offenders as a sanction for probation or parole violations
* Illegal immigrants pending transfer to the INS
* Convicted offenders pending transfer to state or federal institutions
* Witnesses for court
