Mastering Maturity:
An analysis of the main cause in The Catcher in the Rye
Each individual goes done different stages in their life. The experiences they endure, mistakes they make, and lessons they learn along the way plant who they become. The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger in 1951 includes many different char bearers that go through this same metabolic process that other individuals do. Throughout the course of the novel, Salinger develops the main character Holden and builds on his transition from childhood to adulthood, resulting in a drastic miscellanea in his character.
In the beginning of the novel, Holden’s childish ways make it puddle that his maturity level is not real high. The designer gives many examples of this, showing Holden horsing around and playing jokes on others. These events occur mainly when he is with his friends Stradlater and Ackley in the dorms at Pencey. The author illustrates one of these incidents when he says, “All of a sudden- for no bully reason, really, except that I was sort of in the mood for horsing around- I felt like jumping off the washbowl and flapting old Stradlater in a half nelson” (Salinger 30).

This is a clear example of Holden’s immaturity and his tendency to joke around. Holden had no reason to put Stradlater in a wrestling live on other than for his sheer enjoyment.
